Meet the Mathewsons: A Legacy in Classic and Vintage Cars
Mathewson’s, established in 1970, began with modern cars and commercial vehicles in Bedfordshire, building a strong reputation among retail and trade customers. Founder Derek Mathewson’s passion for vintage and classic cars was evident from the start, with many early acquisitions still part of their collection. Over the years, Mathewson’s expanded into vehicle contract hire and leasing across the UK.
In 1988, the family moved to North Yorkshire, maintaining operations in Bedfordshire until they settled. They acquired garages in Scarborough (1988), Malton (1990), and Pickering (1992), operating KIA and Skoda franchises in the 1990s while vintage and classic cars remained secondary.
The focus eventually shifted entirely to classic and vintage cars, leading to the establishment of their Motor Museum. In 2011, they ventured into classic car auctions at their Thornton le Dale premises, which became a popular location due to its scenic village setting and ample parking.
In 2019, Mathewson’s caught the attention of TV producers, leading to their participation in the successful “Bangers & Cash” series on UK TV, produced by Andy Joynson of Air TV. This exposure significantly boosted their profile.
In 2020, Mathewson’s expanded with a new showroom, allowing for the display of over 100 cars, motorbikes, and memorabilia. Their collection includes around 75 classic cars, 50 motorbikes, a dozen classic commercial vehicles, and extensive automobilia.
Mathewson’s holds nine auctions annually, handling about 4,000 vehicles, including lorries, tractors, cars, and motorbikes. Ensuring public safety at these events is a priority, and they encourage pre-auction viewings. The family business continues to grow, actively participating in vehicle gatherings and being members of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs.
